receding gums and hormones?

I had a little sensitivity when I was pregnant with Kate all those many moons ago. Typical pregnancy I think, bleeding gums occasionally etc. Now, thanks to either perimenopause or possibly getting close to the real deal I have been in excruciating pain for the last week because my gums are receding and exposing the nerves! Today I went to the dentist so I have some gel, switched to sensodyne toothpaste and will be buying an electric toothbrush tomorrow. Anyone else have this hormone related issue and have suggestions? I am living on Tylenol right now, not cool since it isn't even working that well!

Not hormone related, but I have a long history of sensitive teeth, and gums that receded way back before I got braces as a child (my teeth were so crowded it was nearly impossible to properly clean them). Sensodyne usually takes about a week to acheive the maximum effect, then you have to keep using it forever. If you use regular toothpaste, the sensitivity will come back quickly. I also use a fluoride rinse, which helps harden the newly-exposed tooth surfaces and reduces sensitivity a bit. Finally, to help stop the receding gums, use one of those extra-soft toothbrushes -- I actually buy children's toothbrushes because I also happen to have a small mouth.
