Two different results with same brand Opk.*UPDATE*got smiley So Upset!

Hi. I started tracking my cycles about 9 months ago.. so I got some cheapie dollar tree opks (NEW CHOICE BRAND )for fun (I wasn't planning on starting until this Jan 2012).

I would either get a positive right away, or one or two days of fade in and then a positive.

I have stuck with those same tests b/c I am familiar with them.

However, recently they changed the tests. The old ones said No LH surge will be confirmed after 5 minutes. The new ones (same brand) say No LH surge will be confirmed after 10 minutes.

I have tested with the "10 minute ones" on cd 10 and cd 11 (twice each day) and got a complete negative (no second line at all). Today, CD 12, around 2pm I tested with the "10 minute one" AND the old "5 minute one" and got DIFFERENT results (same urine, sorry tmi)! The old "5 minute one" was about 25% positive (faded second line). However, the new "10 minute one" was completely white (no pink link AT ALL).

Now, I don't know what to think...they don't sell the "5 minute ones" anymore. So, does that mean that the new "10 minute one" is not accurate?

Has anyone ever used these tests and gotten different results...?

****** UPDATE 12:45 am now Wednesday morning ....***

I am SO UPSET!!!! I went to Walmart, bought the smiley tests... tested at 12:25 am and got a smiley!!!!! ( I tested with my old line tests and they are completely negative!- with the same urine) I am upset b/c my swimmers were ordered to be here on Thursday!!!! I am 39 years old and O pretty close to +opk.... I am SO DEVASTATED.... I will have to cancel the shipping. This will be TWO MONTHS IN A ROW that I don't even get to try to insem. I am beyond bummed. It was to be shipped out today, Weds. 3/28 around 3pm, for delivery BY Thursday 3/29 by 4:30pm By the time I get them it will be at least 36 hours after smiley (and could be many more.. who knows when I would have gotten a smiley- wasted time with the other lined tests).

Other thing is that I took clomid for the first time cd 5-9 this cycle. Wednesday, 3/28, is my cd 13.

Do you think it could be a false positive b/c of the clomid?

Do you think I have any chance to insem.? or would that just be a waste of swimmers and money.?

Never used 10 minute ones, but have been using the 5 minute ones I bought online for about 5 months. Just had a few duds in my last batch (really light test line and pink streaking on stick) so I bought smileys for my last few days until I O. I use the double line ones until it looks positive, then I confirm with smiley (usually). I'd say that method is much more of a sure thing than the line ones since you have to guess on what positive is. Hope that helps!

Thanks teacherin200829.... Where they the ones from the Dollar Tree?
I am really thrown off by this b/c I have always felt real comfortable with them...and like the advance warning from the one or two days of fade in...

Omg..stop using them..they are a waste and don't work at all. I swore by the dollar store opk's and that's all I used until two months ago when I noticed they switched them up..I never got the test line to get darker..like it would be really faint but nothing ever close to being a positive..I think they don't work at all! So I order mine on amazon and they're working perfectly fine..and I used a FRER opk and a dollar store and nothing would come up in the dollar store test but would on the FRER..my advice is use a different opk

Thanks F2Mn Spouse... I was hoping you'd answer b/c I seemed to remember you using the same dollar tree brand.

Did you find the old tests that said that NO Lh surge will be confirmed within 5 minutes were better than the newer ones that say NO lH surge will be confirmed in 10 minutes?

Ok... a stupid question... the Frer.. Is that FIrst Response? Is that the one you order on Amazon?

I don't have time to order any online bc I am on CD 12 today and will have my swimmers here on Thursday, 3/29.

I personally would cancel, even though I know you really don't want to. Reason is, you don't know when for certain your surge started. You got the Smiley but it could have been there 6 hours earlier or more, or you just caught the beginning of it. Given your age, I would cancel. I am so sorry.

I absolutely HATE having to skip a cycle let alone two cycles :( If the order was to be here today I'd say try but I too think you might just be too late. Since there is so much riding on this I would bite the bullet and pay for the smileys for next cycle. It will cost you another about $20 but I also like to use the Answer strips---20 in a box---the reason I like them is that you can start to see the surge coming...you will start out with no second line then slowly see it get darker. As it starts that second line you can start your more expensive smileys. You WON'T get a false smiley from your Clomid BUT it might make a change when you ovulate. For some women it might delay it but for me I went earlier like you...some times I have Oed as early as day 10. Since you know it made you early get those swimmers here earlier. They WILL stay frozen. I am sorry you are struggling with this.

Clomid does increase natural LH early in your cycle. It is reccommended that you dont start testing until 3 to 4 days after your last pill in order to prevent the " false" positive. There is LH in your system that it picks up but it is not a true surge. It is expected that most women will ovulate 5 to 10 days after your last pill. MOST being the operative word. Anyway your RE or GYN can get you in for an ultrasound today to confirm ovulation?

I don't know about the answer tests abut I know the CBE digital says that Clomid will not produce a false positive. So I would send them back too since you believe you O so close to a +OPK. I am so sorry.

Thanks everyone so far for their answers and support. I would really go off the deep end if it wasn't for everyone on this forum and their support!

I called and cancelled my shipment. VERY upset that this is the second cycle in a row I am sitting out b/c of missed O etc. It is so disheartening. But, I am going to try again in April.... with clomid again.

And, I am NEVER USING DOLLAR TREE OPKS (New Choice brand) ever again (they used to be good until they change them a month or two again.)DON"T USE THEM. Horrible! NEVER DETECTED MY SURGE. Got a completely negative opk with NEW CHOICE and a SMILEY with CLear Blue with the same urine/ same time.

Good luck to everyone else.. especially to those who are really going through struggles!

Had to jump on board with this conversation. I NEVER would have gotten pregnant if I hadn't switched OPKs. They do not work the same for everyone!! The first cycle I used Clomid I got pregnant because I could feel myself ovulating, and the OPKs (Answer, two lines) were saying I was still a few days away from O. So I got in the car, drove to Target, bought the most expensive OPKs (CBE smiley face digitals), brought one home, and with diluted urine tested right then. :) I insemmed that night, felt the last O pain at 3 am, and the next morning my Answer OPKs finally said I was almost ready . . . but my cervix was closed up tight. I wasted 3 cycles, 8 vials, 3 shipping costs, Rx money, and a fertility specialist visit . . . all to save a couple bucks on the OPKs. This is a case where being penny-wise and pound-foolish cost me.

It makes sense when you're actually going to insem that month to buy 3 different OPK brands and use them simultaneously, every 8 hours. It's expensive, but it can save you a lot in the long run. I also started monitoring my cervix because that was pretty tell-tale as well.

Good luck ladies! Wishing you all BFPs soon! :)

Thanks Kari for your post.... yeah. I was thinking of adding Answer opks with the cbe smileys.... Yeah, it is expensive to buy opks... but your post really points out that it can be more expensive if you don't..
    Thanks.
