speaking of running...

I mentioned in my response to babybaby that I've just recently gotten into running. I've been through phases with it before, but this is the first time that it seems to be sticking because I'm enjoying it. I'm also on Weight Watchers (and have been off and on for the past year and have lost about 30 pounds), so eating well has me feeling really good. Anyway, I've always been a music lover, and when I used to just walk, I was oddly anal about making a playlist that would allow me to walk to the beat of the music. Now that I'm alternating running and walking (for the past two days, I've done 4min run and 1min walk for thirty minutes...YAY!), I'm just making sure that my playlist's contents is somewhere between 145 and 160 bpm (beats per minute). jog.fm is cool for finding songs, and I also use a Mixmeister program that calculates bpm for me. My newest addiction is using Audacity to make a song faster, so I can run to it. It's really simple, if anyone's interested.

ANYWAY, I'm curious about what music everyone likes to work out to. In real life (haha), as a lifelong singer (and lesbian, HA!), I've always been drawn to female artists like Sara Bareilles, Madonna, Tori Amos, Jann Arden, Sarah McLachlan, etc., but to work out to, I've liked to incorporate all kinds of music (rock, rap, whatever). Running has turned out to be different for me. When I run, I am all about 80s music, which is totally random for me! I mean, I'm a child of the 80s, but some of these cheesy songs that get me going are hilarious, and I would probably never be interested in listening to them otherwise. Here is my current 30ish minute playlist (some altered to be faster than originals and a couple not actually from the 80s, haha):

Madonna - Vogue
John Parr - St. Elmo's Fire
Whitney Houston - I Get So Emotional
Del Shannon - Runaway
Calloway - I Wanna Be Rich
Eddie Money - Take Me Home Tonight
Romantics - Talking in Your Sleep
Billy Joel - It's Still Rock and Roll
Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Round
Michael Sembello - Maniac

By the way, iTunes makes it super easy to make a gapless album, change start/end times, and basically make the playlist whatever you want it to be.

Your turn! Share! :)

ETA: I change this playlist a little bit almost everyday. I just rediscovered a song from my childhood (Pretty Poison - Catch Me, I'm Falling) and am taking 30 seconds to convert it to 150bpm. R and H just left to run some errands, and I'm excited to get on the treadmill. :)

Thanks for the tips!! I'll have to bookmark this thread becasue I completely suck at the iPod/mp3/iTunes/downloading music thing.

But I do have a favorite song that gets me pretty amped up ..... Danger Zone (from the Top Gun soundtrack -- Kenny Loggins, I think). I've used it for kick boxing, but would love to use it for running.

AHHHHHH! you are SO AWESOME! okay, confession time. i used to do the same thing with my mix tapes! i have a lot of dj friends and have messed around with mixing myself, so i am all about making the music "blend" on my mix tapes. i've never used a program for it, but that's pretty cool that those programs exist. :) i just used to do it by sound -- like eye of the tiger goes really smoothly into edge of 17 . . . that's just one i can think of. and i totally TOTALLY love 80s music, not just for working out but for everything. it is really perfect to work out to. some other music you might want to check out for working out is m.i.a. (i used to work out to her all the time), santigold (a bit slower, better for cooling down), dragonette. . . what an awesome thread!

just thought of this, too. most of the stuff that came from grand central records over the last decade was waaaaaaaay downtempo. mark rae is a little easier to work out to than most of the stuff from that label (even though it's still on the slow side).

When I'm on my treadmill I will typically use pandora from my phone and will listen to the " old school hip-hop" I definitely like listening to 80's music too while walking/ running.
